Insulation

Postby MARenovator » Wed Aug 12, 2009 8:36 pm

Hello All!

I need some advice on the best type of insulation for my new addition. We'll be ready to begin closing up the interior of the house very soon and I'm unsure about using icyene insulation. I'm told it's the best product to use. Is it worth all the extra money? Will I realize a tremendous cost savings with heating and cooling bills? Is there any downside to using this insulation as opposed to traditional fiberglass?
Any help would be appreciated.

MARenovator,

I am a builder and I have used the sprayed insulation a few times at the customers' request. It is alot more expensive as I'm sure you know, about 5x as much as fiberglass insulation. It creates an airtight barrier and it is quite effecient for saving on heating/cooling bills. However, each project is different. For instance if your building has alot of windows and doors then it may not be cost effective to go with such an expensive insulation. The R Factor (insulating rating) on most windows, even the best ones is very low, around an R3.
Another downside is doing additional wiring after the insulation is installed. So if you use it make sure you don't need to add any plugs or light switches for a while.

conventional insulation like fiberglass , it's affordable and safe. your idea of using the fiberglass is acceptable. just be sure that it is properly installed.

I haven't handled traditional fiberglass insulation in a long time, but I always thought you had to be careful with it. Maybe some people are allergic to it or more sensitive to it?

I think I remember having some irritation on my arms from handling it, personally. Maybe that was a really old kind.
